Big 5 sometimes has the Savage 111 for $380 on sale in 7mm Rem mag only. it sounds like a good deal since MSRP is $519. Does anybody own one? How much of a difference does the accu trigger make.? I understand the 7mm rem mag can wear out a barral faster then say a .270 win? My son would only shoot it a few times a year and with the price of ammo not a whole lot of rounds maybe 15 to 20 per session would be shot for practice. i know there is not much to be said for the Simmons scope it comes with other has a play toy for kids. I know I have to put in a fair amount of money for a decent scope. Big 5 also sells the Mossberg ATR on sale for $480 but that seems a bit high for that model.

Thanks in advance;

We, as regular shooters, ain't gonna wear out no barrel. My BIL has been shooting the same 7mag for about 15 years not and it still shoots under an inch. There's been a peepot load of jacketed bullets down the barrel of his rifle!
While I can't prove it with scientific data, I feel that a lot of the "barrel burners" have been abused by being shot until you could fry an egg on the barrel. I understand that some of the super high velocity rounds can cause the throat of the chamber to burn a bit, but us regular shooters would never really know the difference or see the drop in accuracy. If you were shooting benchrest matches where the difference in winning or losing is measured in thousands of an inch you'd now it right quick. A buddy, who was into the BR scene, has given away barrels that have made some folks really happy, but to him were done as far as he was concerned. Still shooting ragged holes, just not ONE hole.

There's my 2 cents worth...

Good info. With the price of cooper ammo in Cali I guess I don't have to worry about barrel burnout. i saw the Chuck Hawkes ballistic and recoil tables and I am now thinking that the 7mags little brother the 7mm-08 should be enough for western big game with elk being a controversial choice per various discussion forums.

Thanks;

380 seems like a good price if it is NIB. Even if you would happen to burn the barrel out for some reason, the Savage barrel can be changed easily enough and the A&B barrels seem reasonably priced. A lot of folks seem to like the switch barrels and most have good reported good things about them. A 7 mag is actually pretty pleasant to shoot IMO and is one of my favorite rounds, plenty of punch but surprisingly mild recoil if 150 grain bullets are used.

A 7-08 with 140 grain bullets is hard to beat for whitetail and I found it to be especially easy to handload for. I used the round for elk once (it was the only rifle I had at the time). While I successful, my preference when it comes to elk would be for the 7 mag or, even better, my 300 mag. Cost of factory ammo is pretty comparable between the 7-08 and 7 mag it seems, at least around here.

The accutrigger is kind of nice though none of my hunting rigs from Savage have one. For guns that are keepers, I just have my local friendly smith adjust the trigger and don't look back.

For about the same money, maybe a tad more, I would also look at the Wby Vanguard and check which one has the better "feel". Since I bought my Vanguard, it has quickly become one of my favorite rifles.

I paid $250 for my Savage Model 10 Sierra w/ Accu-Trigger in .243. It was a used gun when I bought it. It is a whole lot more used now. Presented as new then, still does. But if you're in CA, scowering gun shows for a deal like that might not be practical.

I enjoy my Savage immensely, largely due to the fact that it is the most accurate centerfire rifle I've ever owned, and the .243 caliber is a joy to shoot all day long, if I want to. I think the Accu-Trigger makes a HUGE difference and wouldn't want a newer Savage bolt gun without one.
