I just got my Kimber 84M Montana .308 Winchester. I have Leupold VX3 2.5-8x36 glass for it. I put the bolt in the rifle and it fits loose and sloppy. Not at all what I would expect of a $1000 rifle. Is this the norm for today's mass produced crap? My Remington 700 .22-250 is no where near this loose. I am going to take the Kimber back where I bought it and have their gunsmith check it out. It seems way too sloppy to me. I had to special order the gun since no one stocks them around me, so I never really got to hold one and work the bolt. Gander Mtn. currently has a walnut blued 84M, so I stopped in there and checked it out. Its bolt was sloppy, but not as bad as mine. I have yet to shoot it, but I expected a higher quality of fit for the money I paid.

I was looking at a 84m in .300 win mag (I think it was) and the bolt was very nice not at all sloppy I would describe it as just like a remington 700 only alot smoother. I was considering an 84m varmint after that but have since read their accuracy is no better (in some cases worse) than a stock remmy 700 so I decided I wasn't going to take the risk and pay the premium for a Kimber.

One year in Colorado hunting for elk and mule deer we camped on Mount Rahadara(mispelled).
At camp we were met by a hunter with a Remington 700 that had just been sleeved and rebarreled. There was so little movement in the bolt even at rearward position that all were impressed.
2 days later a front came in and temps dropped to at least -50 as the bronco would not even turn over.Temps at the base of the mountain was -28 and we were over 7000 high. That sleeved Remington could not cycle at those temps,we loaned the hunter a 30/06 Savage,it cycled well and he filled his deer tag with the Savage.
Rearward slack don't necessarly mean the bolt won't lock up tight. That Savage felt like there was a mile of rearward slack but it shot well and cycled at all temps and dirty conditions and I would wager that Kimber will do the same.
Any news from the gunsmith?

The smith said he saw no problem with it. It feels loose with no round in the chamber, but with a round chambered, its locked up tight. I bore sighted it the other day and am waiting for a day off work when I don't have to do something else so I can go break it in. I just ordered a bore guide, since it didn't dawn on me earlier that the slender 84M receiver wouldn't take the bore guide I have for my 700. Of course, no local shops would stock a bore guide for a Kimber, so I had to order from Midway.
