I just bought a new H and R varmiteer with the heavy barrel in .223 rem single shot.....i went to the store and asked for some .223 and the guy gave me some 5.56 because they were cheaper....then second one did not eject..it stuck in the chamber..but not bad because we just tapped it with a cleaning rod and it flung out..the other 18 in the box did fine...then the second box..a few hours later...first round..stuck in the chamber..by now i am pissed and i left the range got the shell out cleaned it and put it away.....is it the 5.56 ammo? should i be using strictly .223 in it...i got the winchesters for 4.38 for 20 but they are 5.56. i am new to this caliber so any suggestions will help..thanks

tried some american eagle .223 rems today and they shot excellent..ejecting every time....still havn't shot it out to 100 yds yet but at 50 yds i was shooting 5 shots at sub 1MOA.....

low and behold the answer to my question was in the manuals to the gun (which i never read)...an alert sheet stating to never under any circumstances use 5.56mm NATO in this gun....now comes my fear...did i RUIN anything? of the 5.56's i shot the first one..it shot fine and ejected fine...the second one the casing got stuck and wouldn;t eject..i immediately took it back where i bought it..they stuck a rod down the bore and tapped it very gently and it popped right out so it wasn;t stuck hardly at all..just enough to make the ejector not push it out....he checked the ejector spring..checked ok...then sprayed a little teflon lube in there..took a live round outside and ejected it bunches of times....ok great we go back to the range and shoot the remaining 18..all ejected perfect....went back later yesterday and the first shot did the same thing..no ejection and once again we took a rod and it tapped out really easy.....then cleaned it and put it away until today when i shot .223 rem's....did i damage or maybe hurt anything?

p.s. when i look in the bore from the breech a the beginning of the rifling i see dark shadows almost like dots that start the rifling...they look VERY uniform which makes me think either it is supposed to be like that...or the extra leade on the 5.56 did it...so now i wonder and worry!

5.56 NATO / .223 REM Just like 7.62 NATO / .308 REM Supposedly they are the same. Should shoot either ammo in either gun. Some guns accept both ammos, some don't. My Ruger Mini-14 shoots both 5.56 and .223. My Parker Haile bolt gun shoots both 7.62 and .308 just fine. My .223 Handi Rifle don't like the 5.56 stuff, yet my TC Contender does.

The specs for the military version is supposed to be the same as the civilian version, with the exception of heavier brass. Maybe that is the differance, it's the only one I know of. Rog

There is actually another difference between civilian and military ammo. Yes, they do have heavier brass, but they also have slightly different demensions. There chambers are also designed for different pressures. I heard in some guns they'll work fine and in others they won't.

I use both civilian and militarty brass. I do get more reloadings out of the military stuff. I was given several cases of 7.62 ball ammo many years ago. I would pull the bullets and reload with 150gr Nosler Partitions. Killed many Caribou and Moose with those rounds. Some of the cheap .223 stuff you buy at the gun stores is reloaded Military brass. I shoot it then reload it several more times. But I do sort it by using the head stamp, then testing each group and looking for pressure signs before loading a batch.

What kind of peace operations does NATO hold in Euro Atlantic area? My essay question is NATO peace operations in Euro Atlantic area. I don't get it though.

Okay, I will not shoot 5.56 in a rifle chambered for the .223. How about the other way? Will a .223 function in my AR15? I've always shot Wolf stuff in mine and haven't tried .223.

Off topic. I've got a Remington 788 in .222. That is a tack driver! I'll never buy a bolt rifle chambered for a .223 because I've got this .222.
