My brother's boss passed away 2 years ago and they're just now getting down to disposing of his reloading stuff. As none of his sons reload, they've been giving this stuff to me via my brother. This past Sat.,while at his house,my brother starts loading stuff(AMMO CANS .50 Cal)(4 of them) into my car.
I opened them up and found boxes of primers, cans of powder(IMR4064(2) , IMR3031(2) and (2) WIN748) and bags of shot. I was looking in my reloading manuals and couldn't find 748 listed. I dug out my old Hornady manual and started finding references to it.

I opened the cans to check them. The powders all have consistant colors,no clumping and no off the wall smells. Reckon they'll be okay? I know what to use the 4064 & 3031 for. Was the 748 used mainly for 308s and 223?

Being a bonified and certified scounger, I really don't want to throw this stuff away.

Anybody got any ideas as what to do with about 1000 Small Rifle Magnum primers.

Hunts with Dogs, :D What a deal :!: I have some info., on the 748 but right now it isn't at my finger tips. I think we loaded it in small cases, but don't bank on that. I am sure I can find out if no one else comes up with info. As for the 1000 sm. rifle mag. primers, I haven't used them much, but have some. My pal who used the .223 for years as his only varmit gun used them a great deal with certain powders. Sometimes they would make a fair load really accurate. Of course sometimes the reverse was true. The few I tried in my .222 didn't make much difference, but it loves everything. Bought a bunch cause they were on sale, and figured they will do in a pinch

It is an excellent powder for 223 and light to medium bullets in 308 and 300 Savage...and similar. Works great in 7.62X39.

Heck, having this powder may be the final straw in my having to buy a 223! Brass will be know problem. We have a local company that brings their AR15s,lots of ammo and some night vision equipment to the range regularly, trying to make the scopes break. They just leave huge boxes sitting when they leave. Bullets shouldn't pose too much of a problem either.

Now, if my wife would or could understand my reasoning on this.....

I have a couple cans of it and found 748 can be used in many cartridges. I have loads listed for it in .17 Rem, .222 Rem, .22 BR Rem, .22 PPC, .223 Rem, .222Rem Mag, .22/250, 6x45, 6x47, 6mm International, 6mm PPC, .243 Win, .250 Savage, .260 Rem, 7mm/30 Waters, 7mm/08, 7x57, .284 Win, .30 Rem, .303 Savage, .303 Enfield/British, 30/30 Win, .300 Savage, .307 Win, .308 Win, .30/06, 7.62x54R, .32 Spl, 8x57, 8mm/06, .35 Rem, .356 Win, .358 Win, .350 Rem Mag, .35 Whelen, 9.3x74R, .45/70, .458 Win Mag. There are also light bullet loads in the .270 Win, .300 Rem SAUM, .300 H&H Mag, .300 WSM. If the wife issists you need glasses (you don't see things her way) maybe you can use the powder in something you already have. Drop me a line and I'll try to set you up with something.

I forgot to mention regarding the Small Rifle Mag primers; just use them. You may want to drop your powder charge a little then work up as they sometimes are "hotter" than the standard primer and might raise pressures some. This really isn't any different than when a new primer is tried so is no big deal in my eyes.
I rechecked my sources (Sierra, Hornady, Speer, Lyman, Hodgdon, Barnes, Swift, and Winchester) but came up with nothing on using 748 in the 7.62x39. 7.62x54R (also called 7.62 Russian in the books) but not the AK/SKS round. The Hornady and Sierra manuals are the most recent editions but the others are one generation back. The Winchester manual is one of the freebie pamphlets, #15 I think, and is several years old now. I'm not going to say there aren't any using this powder just that I haven't seen them yet.

Unfortunately, I don't own anything that uses these primers. I'll find someone at the range who needs 'em and do some donating. I checked in my old Hornady Manual again last nite and saw where they had a listing on the 748 for my 243. Reckon I'll go get me some light bullets and play all summer. Of course it may take a while to use up 2 lbs but I'll do my best!
Oh, in this same load of stuff, there was 15 boxes of 209 primers also. Reckon I'll set down at the ole shotshell press and punch out something to shoot at clays this weekend. My brother told me that they had thrown away a couple of cases of wads and hulls already. As he's not a reloader either,he didn't know what a wad looked like til he came over one nite while I was reloading 12ga shells. That's when he told me about throwing away 2 boxes that were full of bags of wads!
I don't know where my Dad failed with him...
