Hillbilly, I have never used a BAR. Auto rifles are not my thing. I have used at least 3 .338's, for a while they were the thing in my part of the country, but most found like I did they kicked very hard, and dropped more than other smaller mags. So for this area they are not popular. In Alaska from what I hear they are popular, but I think in brush country.

Honestly I would rather shoot my .375 or 340 than a .338 loaded to top speed. All of these were in the same rifle a model 700. You have not said what you plan to use this rifle for. There are many areas where elk are shot in heavy timber or at relatively close ranges then it might be fine. While I like magnum calibers and rifles, for 98 percent of the guys that hunt they are too much. Many blame the mags for poor hunting ethics, or just plain poor shooters. For folks that can use them, they are the cream of the crop, BUT unless one is an exprienced rifleman, they are more than most hunters need.
One of my pals son bought a .300 Wea. because he felt his 06 was too light for whitetails.

The truth was he was just a terrible shot, and needed something to blame for his crippling so many deer.

But the worst game shot I ever saw used a 6mm or .243
