I have a Chr Sturm Suhl double rifle. I have been told it was made in 1928. I am very interested in finding out if the gun has any significant value. Does anyone have any ideas?

First - Welcome

Well, I did a search of the WWW for "Chr Sturm Suhl double rifle" and at least I found out the full name is:

CHRISTIAN STURM SUHL. So, it would be from Suhl, Germany. Not a lot out there. Without some nice, clear, photos you won't get much information.

I found that these are normally referred to as Cape Guns.

Here is a link to another posting here at shooting world: viewtopic.php?f=42&t=4741&p=33451

Most of the info I found indicates they were made in the 1800's. Where did you come up with the 1928 date??

Well, I went looking around and got some comments from other forums:

Quote: It's features looks mixed in time. The Suhler mounts are post 1900 for sure & more than likely post WWI. The triggerguard bow is of the early French type, while the horn grip is found on early German central-fire examples. The adornment of the bolsters resembles that of J.J. Reeb of Bonn. Christian Sturm hung out his gun making shingle in 1849 & I'm not sure how long after WWI that the concern survived. Unquote

Quote: My guess: no later than 1923 and if I had to put in a wild shot in the dark I´d say before 1912. Admittedly, I´m guessing wildly, at least regarding the pre-1912 date.

Please post further pics. Judging from the three posted I´ll have to put on a bib. Your friend the "gent" is a lucky man. I agree with Sans Peur, proof marks will reveal further "facts".

I too believe it´s a double rifle, but theoretically it could be a cape gun, I suppose. Unquote

It was suggested that you take it apart - remove the for arm and take the barrels from the receiver. There should be a variety of markings on the flats. Pictures of those would tell the whole story!!

Looking forward to more info....
