I have a question. I have always been a ruger fan, in fact I own more rugers than any other brand combined. Any how, a friend of mine went out and bought a compact M77 chambered in 7mm-08, had the trigger worked and a nice fancy Nikkon scope mounted on it. I am no super marksman, nor am I a rookie, but neither he or I can get this rifle to group worth a crap at 100 yds. We are shooting off of sandbags and allowing barrel to cool between shots, but it will not put 2 shots consistently closer than 4-6 inches of each other. I would think that a rifle and caliber like that would drive tacks at 100 yds. We dont know what else to do. Could it just be a bad gun? Sorry to ramble but we are kinda frustrated with this rifle.

send it to rugger, they will replace it if it indeed is that bad. you could check the action screws also. have you tried other ammo? also if you could shoot it from a vise that will tell you if it is the gun or a faulty scope. good luck and let us know what the problem is when you find it.

4 to 6 inches at 100 yards is a LOT.... check the scope mounts and check to see that the action is secure in the stock. If that all checks out, try a different load (different bullet weight, different manufacturer, or both). If it still won't group, send it to Ruger - it ought to do 1-1/2 inches or better at 100 yards with just about anything you feed it.

Ruger may not be pleased with the aftermarket trigger work; don't know if that'll affect the way they respond or not. Jeff23 had a new 77 trigger tweaked by the factory (see elsewhere in this forum) and it came out just fine, plus it didn't void any warranty.

the scope may be broken.

after a weekend of hunting, i had my 710 leaning up against the truck, and it fell over landing on the scope.

the next weeken i went to the range, and could not get rounds closer than 8 inches to eacther.

one more thought, please forgive me i don't mean to insult you but since it hasn't been mentioned yet. did you check to make sure your scope rings where not put on backwards?since it is a stepped receiver it would have been obvious but i thought i would ask.

Rifle update:
We got the rifle back from ruger, they said they put a new barrel on it and fixed the trigger (which was aftermarket and worked good, but oh well). It shoots like its supposed to, and we are very pleased!

hey midwayman, did they return the after market trigger to you?(they should have in my opinion.) i was warned by someone one time that if you ever send in a rifle for work to replace any non factory part with the original before sending it in because it would not be on the rifle when it was returned. what brand trigger was it? i am going to be putting one on my ruger in the near future, just curious to what worked well for you. how tight are your groups now?

sorry for the late update, I have been out of country for a while. He had a timney trigger put in the rifle before we sent it back to ruger, and they did send it back to us with the rifle. It shoots like a champ, with his handloads you can cover up 3 shots with a quater. I think that is more than satisfactory for shooting deer. I was very pleased with customer service at ruger.
