Hey gents-

Tis been a while since I made it to shooting world. Need your help with something. I keep hearing about this neat savage striker pistol. I'd like to get one, but i'm not real up to date on some of the cailbers chambered for the striker. They do offer the standard 243, 308 7mm-08, but also have these WSM chamberings, in 270, 7mm, and 300. Have any of y'all used these last three noted calibers? I'm toying with getting one in these newer chamberings, but not a lot of practical experience with them. I'd like to have a whitetail deer caliber, but be able to take and elk someday, too. I understand the 7mm magnum, the long cartridge, is considered borderline for taking elk. I wonder if the 7mm WSM would follow in the footsteps? I had a 300 win mag, and know it's overkill for whitetails, but a solid elk cartridge. So a 300WSM would likely reporduce the same situation. Any there any merit to the 270 WSM as a deer/elk combo carridge? Give a holler if y'all have any advise. THis nonsense about shooting an elk with a striker model pistol might be too much, regardless. I do have an 'ol 30 06 that I can use for elk if need be, and I know that'd get the job done.

Drop shot, WWB, 8 point, y'all holler out, let me know what you think.

Tom,

I've shot an Encore pistol in 7-08 and found it to be quite a hand full. I don't believe I'd want to try one of the 30-06s in it,but that's just me. My son has one of the 300wsm in a rifle. He says the recoil isn't unmanageable but thats in a rifle. If you aren't bothered to much by recoil and your wrists can handle it,go for it. I'd ask around a some local clubs or gunshops to find someone who has one before buying it. They may agree to let ya shoot theirs.Who knows, they may have bought more than they can handle and might make ya one heck of a deal!

As for what may be borderline for elk, they shoot these things with arrows! If you pick your shots and don't try to take shots that you know are questionable, you should be fine. Take a look at the elk that the 15 yr old girl killed on the Remington web site. The lowly 243 strikes again! I've never elk hunted before but If you can hunt them with bows or black powder and stay within the limits of your equipment and yourself, then I would go for it with whatever I was comfortable with.
Of course this is only my opinion and others probably want agree entirely if at all.

PS: congrats on the Verona!

I have to agree with Hunts. I have a Magnum Research Lone Eagle in .308 and I'm a big guy - this gun is a handful-who is stronger than the average bear. You are not going to shoot an elk over a 100 yards with a handgun. I don't think you need to past 75 yards so .308 Winchester will do just fine.A short fat in a striker  that would be more than anyone I know could handle. You couldn't shoot it much . i don't think your wrist will take such abuse. Yes they might make this gun in that caliber , but remember there in the business to sell the guns and there are alot of folks who will buy it just because and not think about the coniquiences.

A buddy of mine had a Contender in 45-70. No ports or compensater. One guy shot it who was left handed and it split the web between his thumb and index finger. It had the old style wood grips instead of either wood w/rubber insert or pachmeyer style(rubber). Another guy shot it and left directly afterwards. He couldn't raise his arm for 2 days. The guy who owned this gun was raised on a farm and hand milked cows for years. He had one heck of a grip and huge wrists. He was one of only 2 people that I saw shoot this hand cannon that could handle it.
I reckon the point that I'm trying to make is that even though they make these things doesn't mean just anyone can shoot them. As stated earlier, check around first. Someone may have one they REALLY want to get rid of.

I've got the Striker in 7mm/08 and it is not too uncomfortable to shoot, especially when the porting is used. I do shoot a 454 Casull fairly often and the Striker doesn't seem to be much worse than that. GordonSetter on this site has the 308 version and he seemed happy with it. The muzzle blast and flash is very noticable with some loads, I would expect it to be even greater with one of the short magnum rounds as well as much higher levels of recoil. With a good bullet and decent shot angle, I wouldn't hesitate to use either the 308 or 7mm/08 on elk. I am not a fan of the 243 for deer even though I have a 6mm Rem and love to shoot it. My main gripe is poor bullet performance on large (220+lbs) deer at anything less than broadside or slightly quartering angles. I would suspect this may be an even greater problem with the smaller caliber in a pistol. Pick the 308 or 7mm/08 and you should be be happy.

When I was much younger and was willing to take any challange, our next door neighbor bought a contender in 45/70 and would not shoot it.All they had to say to me was we have a pistol that even you couldn't shoot, thay was it I had to shoot it,I shot it ONCE the challange was answered and I was offered the gun for 300.00,I gladly backed off that deal.Be careful of the bigger calibers,8point shoots a 308 and thats because he can, meaning mabe me and you wouldn't try.Get one of our buddys to send a barrel of your choice and try it,you may prefer 300 wsm,After the 45/70 I quit at pistols.Drop-Shot

Handguns in .45/70 and .300  I like big rifles but why would anyone WANT a gun like that ? :?
Must say though it would be fun when someone was going on about how good they are :D , I'd think it would cure the biggest cases of "headupbum" syndrome  .
