Is there anyone that knows where me and my father and maybe 2 friends could go and shoot some?
Well, I'll tell you what. It's very hard to find a place to hunt prairie dogs. I was raised in Western Kansas, and we had prairie dogs all over the place. Ranchers and farmers would invite us to drive out to their fields a shoot the little critters.

It was maybe the most fun (shooting type) that I've ever had. You could not shoot a prairie dog town out of prairie dogs. If you got some, they'd just produce more. Also you got some interesting shots. From close, full standing presentations to long head shots. You'd miss a lot. But you'd mark you shot, re-dope the wind and shoot again. Real fun shooting.

Then someone invented a poison that land owners could use to kill the little rodents. They were nearly irradicated. Where they still exist they are protected.

You can find places to shoot them. But they are often in private hunting places and you'll have to pay.

What state do you live in? I think Montana, and Wyoming still have public lands where you can hunt. Maybe Nebraska and the Dakotas as well. You might try the Chamber of Commerce in the various cities. Or you can call some large sporting goods stores and ask the folks who work there.

Make a plan and start a search, you'll probably turn something up. If you do, you'll love the hunt.

I don't know about irradicated. Poisons work very well on those little bastards but there's still about 980 Billion of them to shoot out there. Most destructive creature on the planet. Will absolutely destroy a good pasture in no time whatsoever....

I'm from South Dakota and have a lot of family in this state that farm and/or ranch so there's never a shortage of "prarie rats" to shoot.

I just moved from New Mexico...we had our fair share of prairie dogs around there to shoot...some on public land, but most on private land. The land owners didn't mind you shooting them at all, as long as you asked first and cleaned up after yourself. My shooting buddy used to shoot alot of them just before sundown, take a sack lunch with him...wait until it got real dark and then use a night vision scope to shoot the coyotes that came out to clean the carcasses up.

They are fun to shoot. Do you go out and pop them?

Oh yes. I've exploded hundreds of the little bastards back home. It's pretty fun with a .22 believe it or not. They get all "dramatic" when you hit them.

My .270 is my weapon of choice for them though. Blows them to pieces.

I think that shooting prairie dogs is the most fun shooting of all. Also I've never shot anything other than a .22 rimfire.

I first went P. Dog hunting when I was six. I just wish that we had a place around here that had some that I could shoot.

We do have some chuckers, and Beals rodents.

Aren't they fun!! You don't even feel bad when you kill them! I just giggle as their guts splatter in all directions......I hate em but they are fun to shoot.
Around where I live the envirnmentalists genuflect to them. They will destroy a pasture in pretty short order. Where I was raised (Western Kansas) farmers/ranchers would invite us to come out and shoot time. We'd drive our cars onto the fields, shut down the motors and shoot away to our hearts content.

You could not shoot a prairie dog town out of prairie dogs. But when they came out with the poisen they were just about eradicated.

If you live in the eastern United States, I would suggest groundhogs. They are prolific and somewhat of a nuisance to farmers such that the hunting of the varminit is usually welcomed. I hunted them continually growing up in Virginia. There simply aren't enough predators to control their population without some help from hunters.

Take Highway 90 and when you cross into Montana, look for Drummand(I thinlkthats the way you spell it and head east north east,Make the long drive down the driveways to ranchers homes and ask for permission. The first person I went seemed mean but he said not to go into the pasture his cows were in and kill as many as those bas---ds as you can.We set up and waited and the home owners brought us a ham and cheeze sandwich and water to drink, they kept on saying kill them all.We took about 30 shots and about 1/2 were hits by noon, later that day behing us was the most prairie dogs I have ever seen,I used a 22 long rifle and killed 28.The folks said to keep coming back.I have not been there in years but there are signs out in the yards welcoming prairie dog hunters.Thats the place, east of missioula.Go get em.Drop-Shot

Maser the thing about killing them varmits was kinda creepy, when 1 would die several would run to his side and start munching, after we killed a few they served as bait for others to get a meal out the deal. Then we would get good numbers.Going towards Great Falls there are alot on the side of the road, some would wander out into traffic and get killed, that rascal wasn't stopped moving around and several would get killed trying to eat the dead one, sometimes 100's are all over the road dead from trying to eat their own. They are fun with a small caliber rifle.Drop-Shot
