marlin .22 no serial number

    i picked up a marlin 99m1 .22lr from a guy and had it reblued and the stock refinished..boy it looks beautiful! however i noticed two things about it...1. the bolt does not lock open at last shot nor can you lock it open manually....and it does not have a serial number....i looked up this gun in a gun book of values and it told me the years it was produced however that slips my mind at this time....but why would there be no serial number on it? i thought i heard somewhere that they didn;t start serializing firearms until a certain year? not sure if this is true

    Before 1968 there was no requirement for serial numbers!

    since these were produced since 64 i believe..how can i trace it to see what year it was made or is it hopeless?
