Came over from SGW, as thomasartbutler. I shoot a few of my rifles when i'm back in Texas, so I had to come check out the hoop la over here.
Hey TXVASHOOTER,when you hunt what gun and caliber do you use in texas,I hear there are some long shots called for so I was wondering what gun and caliber do you use?Drop-Shot
Re: re: mosey on over...I did Drop shot: greetings to you. I hunt in West Texas, on a palce where the shots don't get much over 150 yards, so I hunt with a .243 for the most part. Put the bullet in the right spot, you'll drop the deer. THat said, I've owned a 300 mag I used for longer shots on diff. ranches, but the one deer I killed at 250-260 yards had the other front shoulder blown off, so I got rid of the gun. (Those 300 mag shells have a little too much power for whitetails, IMHO. Don't like shooting past 200 yards anyways.) I've inherited my grandfather's 30-06, so I've got a gun that'll reach out if need be, but for the most part, it'll be that .243. Chips quoted a .270, a fine caliber as well. I've used a single shot .223 on a few varmits, and boy howdy, that's some fun hunting, a fun caliber, too.
Greetings TXVshooter,I like the 243,mine is a browning BLR and with hornady 100 gr spire point I shoot just under 2 inches for 3 shots at 100 yards. My daughter used it till she got married and it wears a leupold 3X9.It's a super antelope round, the two I shot with it dropped in there tracks.Under the heading of favorite calibers some one said 243,but you better hit what your aiming at,and I agree.I wasn't thinking when I first let my daughter use it and one got shot too far back and I hated it for her.We found the deer but I think it suffered. In well seasoned hands it's tops for deer and lopes, and such ,but not a beginners round. One year in montana we were getting 25.00 per coyote and I took 7 in 2 days and used 90 gr hornadys.Drop-Shot
DS, That .243 is a great caliber for varmits as well. Hornandy makes a great bullet for that sort of thing. 7 in 2 days, sir, do you need a hunting partner?
Hi all ,I mosied on over from SGW too ...the only thing is ,I ALREADY DID but lost all my post credits to the new sight :?
TXVAshooter,if my back heals I'll be going this fall. The spring animals are not as nice as fall ones.I had back surgery in dec so I might be able to shoot this fall.I have not checked about prices yet but at worst there 15.00,I have seen 12.00 but I won't do it unless there paying 15.00 or better.Keep in touch.Drop-Shot
8pointduck I missed seeing your note that you just came over,Congrats and I've read some of your comments and you sound like a good hunter and a good hunter are mostly good people with little exception.Whats your favorite rifle and why?Drop-Shot
Hey Drop-shot, I would have to say my favorite would have to be my Browning A-Bolt .270 , then my custom Remington .300 mag. They are my most accurate rifles. I have others and use them all but those would be my goto guns.
