I'm definitely a fan of major caliber, and I've narrowed my choices to two main contenders...

In this corner, we have the FAL clones. More reliable, from what I've told, but also much more expensive (like by 1/3 to 1/2) than the other contender. Advantages include world-famous reliability and easy availability of surplus parts.

In the right corner, hailing from Spain, we have the CETME. Cheaper, but much more variable in quality. parts are still pretty available, though, and did I mention it's cheap?

So I can't come to a decision... If I buy the CETME, I can have it soon, but if it's a junker, I've wasted my money. The FAL's a little bit surer bet, but I'll have to wait longer, and my instant-gratification urge is getting noisy

between a fal and a cetme, i'd go with the fal.

ive heard a lot of bad things about the cetme's. there seem to be a lot of reliability issues.

you should also look into saiga rifles. you can get a saiga .308 for under $250. the only drawbacks to this gun are the lack of a pistol grip, and reduced mag capacity(there are no saiga hi-cap mags. the rifle must be converted to use fal or m-14 mags)
