After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself.
1 Samuel 18:1
What does it take to form a friendship? Sometimes it’s a bond that develops over years of shared experiences. Sometimes, as in the case of David and Jonathan, the bond forms almost immediately. Whatever the circumstances, friends are those special people with whom we can laugh and cry. They encourage us and stay close to us during the difficult times.
Just the word friend can bring a smile. Whether it’s the person you call when you get good news or the person who accompanies you through your dark valleys, that friend is a rich gift from God. But the greatest friendship gift that God gives us is a friendship with himself. The Creator of the universe promises to be with us always, to encourage us when we are down and to comfort us when we are grieving.
Just as Jonathan and David were loyal to each other through great difficulties, God is faithful to us when we are facing difficulties in our lives. His promise is true — he will never leave or forsake us (see Hebrews 13:5). He encourages us to lay our deepest burdens and concerns on him. He offers to guide us through the storms. That is a friendship worth keeping and maintaining.
Celebrate the gift of God’s friendship — and friendship itself — by worshiping him with a close friend. Share your concerns with that person. Ask that person to lift you up in prayer as you pray for them.
PRAYER
God, thank you for these friendships …
