what is a dum dum bullet?

    what exactly is this type of bullet? some of my friends say its a deep hollow bullet n some say its an exploding bullet some also say its a pure lead bullet thats so soft it expands tremendously upon impact

    so what exaclty is it :?: :?: :?: :?:

    The "dumdum" bullet is the forerunner to the prefragmented bullets. It started as an "X" cut across the nose of the bullet continuing down to about a quarter of the way to the base. If I remember correctly, it was developed by the British during one of the various uprisings in India around the 1880s and got its name from the arsenal it was made at, Dumdum, India. These bullets were outlawed at the first Geneva convention in 1899 but not followed by Britian until a few years later.
