my recomendation on scopes wold be go to a big store, GM, Cabelas, bass pro local store and look at and ecide what one you want. Then look on the internet for the same scope. you usually can find a deal of 30 bucks or so and not have to pay shippin and taxes also. but make sure they are an athurized dealer otherwise your warrenty is void. I am quite fond of skyoptics.com but that is me. Sorry about your dad but that is where i would want to go too either there or in a deer blind.

Klyde2 I too have a 742 wood master, but mine is 30/06,they made them in different calibers,I've seen 243's but only one.Mine wears a leupold VXll 3-9X40,I have several leupolds and have never been dissatisfied.I also own a redfield 2-7 wide field,I think 33 but with wide field it seems much more, redfields are no longer made in the USA but the folks that own them say they are fine.Besides a leupold take a look at Burris from Greely Colarado.I bought 2 leupolds off ebay and have no problems and if I do they have a life time warrenty,it don't matter if I'm the original owner or not.Enjoy that 742 the way your dad did, good luck.Drop-Shot
